GSPD Condemns Shatta Wale’s Insensitive Remarks on Disability

The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has strongly criticized Shatta Wale, a prominent Ghanaian musician, for his recent comments mocking Stonebouy, a fellow musician with a disability.

In a statement signed by Mr. Matthew Annor Kodom, National President of the GSPD, the organization expressed deep concern over a video circulating on social media where Shatta Wale made derogatory remarks about Stonebouy’s disability.

The statement highlighted Shatta Wale’s offensive statement, where he implied that Stonebouy’s disability was a result of his character, suggesting that “God made [him] a disabled person” because he was “a bad person.” The GSPD emphasized that such comments are not only hurtful but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes about persons with disabilities.

Moreover, the GSPD reminded Shatta Wale that a significant portion of his fan base comprises persons with disabilities, making his remarks even more unacceptable and hurtful to his own supporters.

The organization called on Shatta Wale to retract his statement, remove the video from social media platforms, and issue a public apology to all persons with disabilities and the Ghanaian public.

Citing the Disability Act 715, the GSPD emphasized that using a person’s disability to mock or ridicule them constitutes a punishable offense under the law.
The organization condemned Shatta Wale’s comments as primitive and irresponsible, particularly considering his status as a high-profile personality with significant influence.

The GSPD urged the public to show empathy and respect towards persons with disabilities, emphasizing that disability does not equate to being cursed or punished by a higher power.

The organization reiterated the importance of embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity in society.

The GSPD called for greater awareness and sensitivity towards issues affecting persons with disabilities, urging all individuals to refrain from discriminatory behavior and language.
